Fayetteville, like her sister - city, Beckley is the county seat and has a history pre-dating the Civil War. It shares its name with the county, which was named for the French Marquis de-Lafayette who fought with, and supported America during the Revolutionary War.

Fayetteville has earned the distinction of being named one of National Geographic's most interesting places to live. It is home to the New River Gorge and the largest arch suspension bridge of its kind in the world. It is a small town lined with antique shops and small cafes.

Fayetteville is also home to many outdoor sports outfitters and guides. Just down the road is Gauley Bridge known for its white water rapids.
